Greene Acres Community Garden to host a fall Garlic Gala

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio — On Monday, October 25 at 6 p.m., the Greene Acres Community Garden Inc. will host a fall Garlic Gala in partnership with the City of Broadview Heights that will feature everyone's favorite allium—garlic—and how to grow it. This free event will be at the Broadview Heights Recreation Center, 9543 Broadview Road.

Garlic is easy to grow and while humans love it, deer won't touch it. Hence, if you have a sunny grass-free spot in your yard with decent soil, you can grow garlic. The cloves go in the ground in mid-fall, sprout at the end of winter, grow through spring, and are ready to harvest in summer.

At the Gala, Greene Acres gardeners will chat about their garlic growing experiences. Topics will include when to plant and harvest garlic, what to do with those weird curly scapes, curing garlic for storage, etc. The group will also hand out garlic cloves to plant at home (while supplies last) and serve light refreshments.

"Sometimes we harvest big impressive heads of garlic, and sometimes they're not quite so showy," reports Greene Acres gardener and garlic lover Erin Nowjack. "But one thing is always true: That buttery garlic bread or those roasted cloves atop a pizza pie taste better when we've grown the garlic ourselves."

Everyone is welcome to this fun and casual event. While it is free, donations are always welcome. Also, please register for the Gala by dropping the Garden a line at and indicating attendees' names and cities in your email. Space is limited.

Greene Acres Community Garden is an organic operation that includes more than 90 plots and 70 gardening members. In addition, the space features an education plot, monarch waystation, rain barrel, composting bins, and standing plots for members with limited mobility. There are also several active bee boxes just to the rear of the garden, which are tended by Revere Honey and Rüdiger Farms. The busy hives have yielded hundreds of pounds of wonderful honey.

Each year, Greene Acres gardeners donate fresh produce to area foodbanks. Over the past two years, those donations reached 1000 pounds. Visit for more information or find us on Facebook at @greeneacresCG.
