We have been receiving many complaints about fraudulent calls from the IRS asking residents for their personal information and or demanding money from them. The calls threaten to arrest and in some cases deport an individual if they do not give them their information. Residents should not give out any personal information over the phone and should contact the police department if they receive a call asking them to do so. Here is the link to the U.S. Treasury to report fraud also.

*** 6-27-2014  We recently received a Complaint with the "scammer" identifying themselves as being from the local Utility Company warning the victim they are late on a utility bill and their service will be cut off it they do not pay immediately.  The "scammer" instructed the victim to purchase a prepaid money card and place a certain amount on the card.

On scams like this the victim is then told to call back and provide the numbers from the money card in order to pay the bill.  Once the perpetrator has the info, they are untraceable and have gotten away with the money.  Scammers like prepaid debit cards because they do not have to show a photo ID to spend money on the cards.
